CELEBRATING MOTHER'S DAY

For Mother’s Day, we’re spotlighting the creative, stylish and straight-up iconic mums in our world. We asked a few friends of the brand, mums and their kids, to share their thoughts on motherhood and the moments that make it meaningful.

Suzi, Poppy & Andre

What’s one piece of advice you hope Poppy & Andre actually remember?
Be well mannered and kind to others.

If Poppy were to describe you in one word, what would she say?
Hopefully slightly eccentric.

What’s something completely random you’ve mastered since becoming a mum?
I can work out how many cartons to put in a forty foot  shipping container.

What do you collect, consciously or not?
Print shirts and colourful yarn.

What’s something you’ve never told your children but feel you should?
If I haven’t told them by now I’m never going to tell them.

What did you love most about being a Mum that’s surprised you?
I love that we can always find something to make us chortle together .

What did your mum teach you that you’ve tried to pass on to your child?
Laughter is the best remedy for a lot of misery. And how to be a fabulous cook!

Simmy & Harlow

What’s one piece of advice you hope Harlow actually remembers?
To express himself authentically always, in hopes to inspire others to do the same.

If Harlow could describe you in one word, what do you think he would say?
Safe
What’s something completely random you’ve mastered since becoming a mum?
Doing literally anything and everything with one arm!

What do you collect, consciously or not?
Powerful women!

What’s something Mum’s don’t tell their kids that you feel you should?
That I won’t always know the answers to everything and sometimes I get things wrong. I will always acknowledge and be honest about this

What did you love most about being a Mum that’s surprised you?
I actually love that I have an excuse to not do things that aren’t a full body fuck yes. I’ve always been a fomo gal, but there’s nowhere I’d rather be than being present with my boy!

What did your mum teach you that you’re tried to pass on to your child?
Inner strength and emotional resilience! I surprise myself constantly and she taught me this without words. Purely by just being a supermama always.

Luc & Artie

What’s one piece of advice you hope Artie actually remembers?
To explore the many things that interest him.
To always listen to himself and his own instincts, to be discerning of outside influence, above all enjoy all the experiences of his life they are all valuable even if they don’t seem that way at the time.

If Artie were to describe you in one word, what would he say?
My favourite Mother’s Day poem he wrote to me in year two is that I’m  “Generous, thoughtful and peaceful” Let’s hope he still feels that way.

What’s something completely random you’ve mastered since becoming a mum?
Arthur came to seven countries with me before he was one. I’ve always been into packing maliciously, motherhood introduced  dust bags as sections on whole new level.

What do you collect, consciously or not?
I very consciously collect books and sentimental objects. I recently read a quote that changed my perception on the only things we keep “our memories are our greatest heirlooms”.  My own mother always encouraged me to frame a trip with a perfume and a landscape. (Go somewhere alone you can return to in your own mind at anytime before you leave the place you are visiting)

Now I do my best to add in a new scent and a view to my heirloom collections wherever I visit.

What’s something you’ve never told your child but feel you should?
That life will let you down, you will loose people you love and that it will only make you a deeper more empathetic person.

What did you love most about being a Mum that’s surprised you?
My perception of how inherently spiritual existence is. To exist is incompressible.

What did your mum teach you that you’re tried to pass on to your child?
To love deeply and fiercely, to always read books and write letters,  immesh completely  in one’s passions and the power of solitude and self conviction. Oh she always told me how remarkable it was to dream in another language. My mother was fluent in three, I struggle to order a margarita in Spanish, lucky Arthur is taking to learning Italian naturally as she did. She would be proud.

Sarah & Lu

What’s one piece of advice you hope Luella actually remembers?
To not fear failure. In getting to know yourself and navigate this whacky human experience, you're going to break things, hurt yourself, and fail. And that's okay, because through those moments, hopefully, you learn how to care for what you love, be gentle with yourself, and succeed on your own terms. And if you don't, you keep going until you do. Your life’s work.

If Luella were to describe you in one word, what would she say?
I asked her, and she said… “stinky” — which I think pretty much sums up the joy of motherhood.

What’s something completely random you’ve mastered since becoming a mum?
I thought it would be storytelling—long, rambling, magical tales. But these days, I can barely remember my EFTPOS PIN, let alone spin a complex fairy universe at bedtime. So probably: catching spiders and bugs. Mostly Daddy Long Legs. Mostly with my bare hands.

What do you collect, consciously or not?
Pleats Please—lol.
Second to that: coffee cups in my car.

What’s something you’ve never told Luella but feel you should?
That the world is a devastating place and terrible things happen to wonderful people. But there’s enough time for her to find that out on her own.

What did you love most about being a mum that surprised you?
Being a mum is a wild experience—it constantly surprises me. Right now, what amazes me is that this little collection of cells I wove inside my body now absolutely cracks me up. We share the same sense of humour. Her gags, her accents, her rolling commentary on the world—she makes me laugh 'til I cry. I never imagined I’d laugh this heartily with my creation, it brings me much joy.

What did your mum teach you that you’ve tried to pass on to Luella?
My mum is very tactile—someone who always says “I love you.” She's expressive with her affection and care, and I make sure to do the same with Lu. When I say, “Hey…,” she’ll roll her eyes and say, “Let me guess—you love me?” And I just smile and say, “Yep.” And I do. I love her more than anything in the world

Luciana, Liana & Kip

What’s one piece of advice you hope Liana actually remembers?
To always maintain her independence.

If Liana were to describe you in one word, what would she say?
Crazy.

What’s something completely random you’ve mastered being a mum?
Novelty birthday cakes.

What do you collect, consciously or not?
Shoes, handbags… and friends. I have too many but love them all.

What’s something you’ve never told your children but feel you should?
I don't feel mature enough to be a Mum.

What did you love most about being a Mum that surprised you?
How much I love my kids… given I don’t actually like kids in general.

What did your mum teach you that you tried to pass on to your children?
Not to waste, to reuse and up-cycle. And also to laugh. Her sense of humour was wicked.

Tor & Brohn

What’s one piece of advice you hope Brohn actually remembers?
DON’T HAVE KIDS HAHA

If Brohn were to describe you in one word, what would he say?
His rock

What’s something completely random you’ve mastered since becoming a Mum?
Being a Mother and a Father.

What do you collect, consciously or not?
Plants consciously, Fashion unconsciously.

What’s something you’ve never told your children but feel you should?
If I tell them, I will have to kill them.

What did you love most about being a Mum that’s surprised you?
How deeply I love my boys and how they've grown into my best mates.

What did your mum teach you that you’ve tried to pass on to your child?
Kindness, Honesty and Respect
